Occasionally Second Harvest Food Bank has non-perishables to help local food banks.  We were able to unload tons of fresh fruit and 50 lb. bags of potatoes.  Great job, guys!

Not Just Any Soldier

Each semester my students write letters to heroes serving in the armed forces.  We use anysoldier.com to choose men and women we’d like to write to and collect care packages for.  As mentioned before, we often get local elementary students involved in the creation of our gifts.  We’ve been lucky to correspond with many impressive soldiers in the past.  However, this year we were blessed to serendipitously find the young man pictured above.  He generously takes the time to respond to all students who write to him, answering their questions and offering words of encouragement.  What an inspiration!

Pinwheels for Peace

September 21, 2010 was the first time our school celebrated National World Peace Day (or Whirled Peace Day).  Students wrote wishes for peace and dreams for the future on paper that they then crafted into pinwheels.    We made banners and posters for the building and ‘planted’ our pinwheels by the road for drivers to see as they passed by.
